Tynedale 21, Melrose 31.
TYNEDALE shook off the summer sloth with an energetic warm-up match against Scottish Premier Division outfit Melrose.
The Scots were comfortable enough winners, but Tynedale showed in patches they will again be a force to be reckoned with again this season.
Tynedale had a number of regulars missing through holidays and Middlesex Sevens commitments, and the Scots seemed to have a edge when it came to match fitness.
Impressing for Tynedale was full back Sep Visser, who put in some good runs, and there was some solid work by the pack in the second period.
Tynedale welcomed back charismatic prop Peter Southern after his brief spell with the Borderers, and there was also a chance for flanker Jamie Murray to renew some auld acquaintances after his stint at Greenyards some years ago.
Melrose looked impressive from the start, and took the lead on seven minutes when winger Joe Helps went over after good build-up play.
The conversion attempt by fly half Scott White came back off the post.
Worse was to follow for Tynedale when they dropped the ball in midfield.
It was instantly scooped up by the Scots, and winger Calum Anderson went steaming in for Melrose’s second try on 23 minutes.
This time, White’s conversion attempt from close to the touchline was successful, and Melrose led 12-0.
Tynedale rang the changes to give most of the squad some game time, and slick play down the wing saw Heaps cross for his second try on 35 minutes.
White sliced the conversion wide, but Tynedale were looking down the barrel at 17-0 behind.
Just on half time though, the excellent Visser engineered a Tynedale breakaway, and scrum half Matty Outson seemed to have scored.
He was held just short, but when the ball was recycled, man mountain Greg Irvin was unstoppable for Tynedale’s first try.
Gavin Beasley converted to make it 17-7 at the interval.
Tynedale should have narrowed the gap still further seven minutes into the second half, but with two men outside him, Murray decided to go it alone, and the ball was intercepted.
After 18 minutes, a series of missed tackles allowed Anderson to stroll in for his second try, which White converted.
Five minutes later, a swift break up the left allowed hooker Richard Ferguson to run in from 30 metres for the fifth Melrose try, which was again converted.
Tynedale finished strongly however, and after slick inter-passing by the forwards, the former Harrogate and Durham University lock Richard Boyle battered his way over for a try which Beasley improved with his conversion.
And on 70 minutes, more excellent forward pressure saw a drive halted near the line, only for Irvin to twist over from close range for his second try, which Beasley converted.
Planned games against both Boroughmuir and Kendal failed to materialise this weekend, so there will be an intra-club match tomorrow with a side coached by senior coach Tom Borthwick taking on an Ian Peel XV.
